Why is School Important?

A question raised by most school children and even some high school people. A long time ago believe it or not there was more people that didn't know how to read or even write, than there was people that did. A time where there was no technology or any reason to have to cram your mind.

Think about it. Say school didn't exist, or say it did but you could choose not to go. What do you think you would do all day? Not play on the computer, not read or write any books obviously because you never learned how to. Would your parents just teach you the fundamentals of reading or writing? No. Where would they have got the information from? They didn't go to school and neither did their parents.

Very few people knew how to read and write books and they were considered to be lucky.

Though it isn't all about just knowing how to read and to write. It is also about opportunity and progression. Today there are children in elementary school that are far more intelligent than some adults hundreds of years ago.

But enough of that. Lets dig into why it is important and what it really does.

A fairly difficult question if I would say so. Well lets take a look at it and see if we can dig into its true meaning.

What is being educated mean?

Well according to http://www.merriam-webster.com being educated means "the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process."

The development resulting from an educational process (in other words school)

What does it mean to learn something?

Again according to http://www.merriam-webster.com to learn means " to gain knowledge or understanding of or skill in by study, instruction, or experience."

Okay that makes sense. Being educated means to develop your mind and to learn means to gain knowledge or understanding.

Now that we have an official definition of both we can really tackle the meaning of the question, shall we? Alright when you go through school what is really happening? Sure we are both learning something and we are being educated but the main reason is to expand your mind.

Sure you may not remember that Au is the symbol for gold and that d=r * t but you are developing your mind and becoming a better problem solver. You also probably will not remember the writing rubric but you will be able to form your thoughts in an intelligent sounding way.

Another way to look at school is this. It is not designed for everyone to like it. That is why most of us hate it. But the reason for that is to introduce you to all kinds of thinking and you can then expand off of that one when you head into college and get a job in your sought after field.

The one unfortunate limits to school is that it focuses more on problem solving and literacy and less on the creativeness of our minds.

Believe it or not. Getting out of high school is just the beginning. Now that you have a better understanding about what you like to do you can begin to specialize. This is where most of your learning will take place.

Look at it this way. Elementary school - high school is to expand your mind and going to college to specialize in a certain set of skills.

Take into consideration that it is never too early to think about what you want to specialize in. if you are setting there in the 3rd grade and you are the best artist in your class and you are passionate about it, then don't hesitate to expand your skills and think of the possibility of being a good artist. Just tough out school and wait for college until your creative side can truly shine.
